Viola Hastings plays for the girls' soccer team at Cornwall Prep alongside her friends Kia and Yvonne, and she hopes to play for the North Carolina Tar Heels. When the school cuts the team, Coach Pistonek refuses to let the girls join the boys' squad, and her boyfriend Justin backs him, ending their relationship. Her twin brother Sebastian, expelled from Cornwall for skipping classes, is expected at Illyria Prep but slips away to London with his band. With help from her friend Paul, Viola passes herself off as Sebastian and takes his place at Illyria, intending to beat Cornwall and prove the coach wrong. She rooms with Duke Orsino, the soccer captain, who has long wanted to date Olivia Lennox. Duke offers to train her if she speaks to Olivia on his behalf.

- Channing Tatum was chosen at Amanda Bynes's insistence, as she felt he would be received well by audiences. She told Paper in 2018 that she totally fought for him because he wasn't famous yet, having just done a Mountain Dew commercial, while the producers objected that he was much older than the rest of the cast.
- In a 2018 interview with Paper, Amanda Bynes said her role in the film eventually had a negative effect on her mental health: when the movie came out and she saw it she went into a deep depression for four to six months because she didn't like how she looked as a boy.
- Neither star actually knew how to play soccer before filming began, so Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum trained for hours every day to convincingly pull off the sport's on-field scenes.
- The bathroom brawl between Amanda Bynes, Laura Ramsey and Alexandra Breckenridge's characters used real physical stunts performed by the actresses themselves rather than only their stunt doubles.
