Plot summary
Beth has published memoirs and teaches creative writing in New York City, and she has just completed her first novel. She lives with her husband, Don, a therapist who is uneasy about growing older, and their son Elliot, 23, who works at a cannabis store. When Beth's agent says the book needs several revisions, Beth begins to doubt it; Don reads a draft and suggests she look for an agent who is more enthusiastic. The two are shopping for socks when Don tells his brother-in-law Mark, an actor, that he does not like the novel and has not been able to say so to Beth. She walks into the store with her sister Sarah and hears him.
