Plot summary
At Christmas, Jake Doyle tells his daughter Annie about the December he remembers from his childhood in suburban Chicago, when he was ten and wanted a Nintendo Entertainment System. Every day the school gathers outside the home of Timothy Keane, the richest boy in Jake's grade, who chooses ten children to play in his basement. Jake asks his mother Kathy and his father John for a console of his own and is turned down. Hearing that a Scout fundraiser for Christmas wreaths offers a Nintendo as its first prize, he and his friends try to sell the most wreaths. His sister Lizzy longs for a Cabbage Patch Kids doll, so Jake passes along hints about it to their parents in return for her help with his sales.
