Plot summary

Is there a joke the Holocaust will not bear? The question at hand is whether humor can touch a catastrophe of that size, whether a boundary around it can be fixed, and whether fixing one is worth wanting. The answers reach past this single subject to the other things a free-speaking society agrees not to laugh at. Popular culture supplies much of the evidence, and comedians argue their side of it. Much of it returns to Renée Firestone, an Auschwitz survivor, who talks about jokes and laughter inside the camps and about the pleasure she found in life once the war was over.
