Plot summary
In 1966, Daniel Ellsberg, a State Department analyst, records the war in Vietnam and concludes it cannot be won. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara privately agrees with him, then tells reporters he remains confident in the war effort. Working later for the RAND Corporation, Ellsberg copies thousands of classified pages tracing two decades of American involvement and gives them to the New York Times. In 1971, Katharine Graham has run the Washington Post for eight years since her husband's death, and wants to take the company public. Editor Ben Bradlee reads the Times exclusive and wants the Post to pursue the story, though Graham is close to McNamara, a figure at its center.
