Plot summary
Mai Su is thirteen and lives in Grainland with her mother Molly, who has grown emotionally dependent on robots since Mai's father left and later died. Mai dislikes the machines and feels excluded. At a launch event at IQ Robotics headquarters, she slips away from Molly and finds a hidden lab where Dr. Tanner Rice has been building an offensive robot, 7723. Mai switches it on and is caught by security, who bring her back to the launch, where IQ Robotics chief executive Justin Pin unveils a new line of Q-Bots. 7723 leaves the lab and is hunted by law enforcement; he ends up deep in the city's lower levels with a damaged memory core. Mai later finds him in her backyard while checking on her dog Momo, sees his weapons, and agrees he can stay in the shed.
