Plot summary
Melvin has dropped out of medical school and now works in the planning office of an unnamed city. His older sister is the supervisor there, and she looks after him instead of pressing him to take on more. A phone call puts him back in touch with an old friend, and the two arrange to meet for dinner that night. The friend arrives early for a drink with a woman he knows, and by the appointed hour four people sit down to eat, each tied in some way to another at the table. Wine fuels a long meal, and the conversation moves through religion, ghosts, relationships and fetishes.
