Plot summary
Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher works as a journalist at a Los Angeles paper. His aunt Belle leaves him an 80-acre Louisiana plantation called Belle Isle, and attorney Amanda Ray Ross tells him a buyer has made an anonymous $225,000 offer for it. Fletch arrives in Thibodaux to find the mansion dilapidated, and the caretaker, Calculus Entropy, stays on. He has dinner with Ross at her home. The next morning she is dead, and Fletch is charged with killing her and taken into custody. Hamilton "Ham" Johnson, a lawyer, gets him released. Becky Culpepper, a realtor, then presents a second, larger offer of $250,000. Fletch turns it down and sets out to learn who is bidding for the land.
