Plot summary
Ben Archer was six when his father left, and he and his mother Sandy built a close life together in a Seattle loft. Five years later Sandy is ready to marry again and is dating Jack Sturgess, a federal prosecutor who has just sent the mobster Frank Renda to prison for fifty years. Frank's son Joey repeats his father's threat of revenge. Ben resents Jack moving in on a trial basis and works to make him feel unwelcome. At school he meets Norman Bronski and pretends to want to join the Indian Guides, a father-son program run by the YMCA, so the club will drive Jack away. Jack goes along at Sandy's insistence, and the two end up in Norman's tribe, the Minotauks.

- A Walt Disney Records soundtrack was scheduled to tie in with the film's 1995 release but was never issued, because Disney could not clear several songs, most notably C+C Music Factory's "Gonna Make You Sweat" and Enigma's "Return to Innocence". "Hit the Road Jack", by R&B artist Percy Mayfield, was cleared, yet the album still never made it to market.
