Plot summary

Jack Thatcher daydreams through fairy tale school, where he is told to give up his most important possession. He takes his video game, the C.O.W., to a pawn shop that appears from nowhere and asks for beans instead of money, coming away with three. At home his mother has lost her job, the shop has vanished, and he is left with a book of blank pages. He throws the beans outside; the goose, Grayson, swallows one and becomes a talking man, while the rest grow into a beanstalk reaching the sky. Jack and Grayson climb into a kingdom ruled by a giant, where Verri Saddus's granddaughter Destiny has been changed into a harp. A guard who speaks only in opposites and a girl named Jillian join them on the way to the giant's castle.
