Plot summary
Rusty Griswold flies for Econo-Air and lives in suburban Chicago with his wife Debbie and their sons, fourteen-year-old James and twelve-year-old Kevin. Kevin bullies James, and Rusty and Debbie's marriage has gone stale. After friends Jack and Nancy Peterson boast about their Paris holiday, Rusty decides to skip the family's usual cabin in Cheboygan, Michigan, and instead drive everyone to Walley World, the theme park he visited as a child. He rents a Tartan Prancer, a complicated minivan from Albania. In Memphis, Debbie visits her old Tri Pi sorority house. At a motel, James meets Adena. A local in Arkansas leads the family to a hot spring, and their van is broken into.
