Plot summary

Mitch Weaver and Sam McKenna grow up under Sam's father Pops, who teaches them not to let anyone push them around. As adults, Mitch loses job after job and his girlfriend leaves him, so he moves into the McKenna home. Pops has a heart attack, and Dr. Farthing, a gambling surgeon, offers to move him up the transplant waiting list for $50,000 that would clear a bookie's debt. The friends take jobs at a cinema, get even with its manager, and the other staff urge them to make a living at it. Their new service, Dirty Work, takes on paying clients. Mitch falls for Kathy, who works at a car lot, and the two humiliate her boss on live television.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Dirty Work (1998)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • During production, star Norm Macdonald was fired from Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update by NBC executive Don Ohlmeyer, a friend of O. J. Simpson who took offense at Macdonald's pointed Simpson jokes. Ohlmeyer then refused to sell advertising or air commercials for Dirty Work; NBC relented a week after the premiere, and Ohlmeyer was forced into retirement soon afterward.
  • Chevy Chase was impressed by the original raunchy, R-rated script, including a filmed but cut gag with donuts photographed around Mitch and Sam's genitals, and begged Norm Macdonald to allow no changes. The studio insisted on a PG-13 rating and moved the release from February to June, where it fared poorly against Godzilla.
  • The band The Ergs! took their titles from this film: their two singles collections, 2008's Hindsight is 20/20, My Friend and 2016's Hindsight is 20/20, My Friend Vol. 2: Okay, Enough Reminiscing, and their 2008 EP, That's It... Bye, are all named after lines from the movie.
  • Norm Macdonald offered Howard Stern the role of Satan, but Stern declined, and Adam Sandler was eventually cast in the part instead.
  • Dirty Work was Chris Farley's last released film appearance: he filmed his role in the comedy before his fatal drug overdose, which came in December 1997.
