Plot summary

The TunnelVision network, uncensored under a Bill of Rights passed in 1983, has become the most-watched channel in history by 1985. Its president, Christian A. Broder, is called before a Senate sub-committee led by Senator McMannus, who blames the network for crime and unemployment and wants it shut down. To judge the channel, the committee watches what is presented as a typical day of TunnelVision broadcasting: a game show whose contestants answer embarrassing questions or take electric shocks, a children's press conference, cop dramas, sitcoms, news reports and commercials for bogus products. The programming is a string of unconnected sketches spoofing the popular television of the day.
