Plot summary
Nick Halloway works as a stock analyst in San Francisco and keeps his life free of commitments and close ties. One evening at the Academy Club, his friend George Talbot brings Alice Monroe, a producer of television documentaries, over to his table. Nick and Alice feel an instant pull toward each other and arrange to meet for lunch. The next morning Nick, still hung over, sits through a shareholders' meeting at Magnascopic Laboratories and leaves the room to rest. A technician spills coffee onto a console, the building is cleared, and Nick sleeps through the alarm. The accident leaves much of the building invisible, and Nick with it. CIA operative David Jenkins arrives, sees what has become of Nick, and decides to hunt him rather than report him, with his supervisor Warren Singleton's agreement.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- John Carpenter called Chevy Chase and Daryl Hannah "the stuff of nightmares" and "impossible to direct", and said Chase would often refuse to wear his special effects makeup, removing it early and ruining a day's filming.
- An alternate ending showing Alice giving birth to an invisible child was filmed but cut; John Carpenter said Warner Bros. feared audiences would see the baby as "a freak, an unfortunate and innocent diabolical child."
- For the effect of Nick's invisible face covered in flesh-colored make-up, Chevy Chase's head was coated in blue cosmetic, his tongue and teeth in blue food coloring and his corneas in blue contact lenses, an ordeal worsened by June heat and studio lighting.
- Shirley Walker, hired after Jack Nitzsche turned the job down, became the first woman to compose an entire symphonic score, which she also orchestrated and conducted alone; it was her first official solo film score.
- William Goldman wrote three drafts and Warners was ready to greenlight the film, but Chevy Chase was unhappy with the script; the studio backed Chase, and Ivan Reitman left the project.
- Harry F. Saint's novel Memoirs of an Invisible Man was still unfinished in 1986 when Chevy Chase was given it to read; his interest set off a bidding war among studios, and Warner Bros. paid $1.35 million for the film rights.
- Because of Industrial Light & Magic's effects work, John Carpenter said "we essentially had to shoot the same movie twice", with each normal take re-filmed by bulky VistaVision motion control cameras that gathered digital data.
- William Goldman left the project, reportedly telling Chevy Chase, "I'm sorry, but I'm too old and too rich to put up with this shit."
