Harold Ramis
Biography
Harold Ramis was an American actor, comedian and director who began in Chicago improvisation before becoming head writer and a performer on the sketch series SCTV. He moved into film by co-writing National Lampoon's Animal House (1978) and Meatballs, then made his directorial debut with Caddyshack. He co-wrote and starred as Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters (1984) and its sequel Ghostbusters II (1989), and played Russell Ziskey in Stripes (1981). His directing credits include the comedy Groundhog Day (1993), which he wrote with Danny Rubin and which brought them a BAFTA for best original screenplay. He also directed Analyze This and Analyze That. Later acting roles came in As Good as It Gets (1997) and Knocked Up (2007). He wrote, produced, directed and acted in Year One (2009). Ramis died in 2014.

In 2004, Ramis declined the chance to direct Guess Who, which was then titled The Dinner Party, since he felt the script was poorly written.
A role that slipped away
In 1982, Ramis signed on to direct a movie version of John Kennedy Toole's Pulitzer Prize-winning book A Confederacy of Dunces. John Belushi and Richard Pryor were set to star, but the project fell apart.
