John Belushi

Biography

John Belushi was an American comedian, actor and musician who came out of the Chicago comedy scene. He formed the West Compass Trio with Tino Insana and Steve Beshekas, and Bernard Sahlins brought him into The Second City, where he met Dan Aykroyd. In 1975 Chevy Chase and Michael O'Donoghue suggested him to Lorne Michaels, and he became one of Saturday Night Live's first-season cast members, developing characters including Henry Kissinger and Ludwig van Beethoven. With Aykroyd he created the Blues Brothers, a band that released Briefcase Full of Blues and later led to the film The Blues Brothers (1980). His screen work also included National Lampoon's Animal House (1978) and Continental Divide (1981). Rolling Stone later ranked him the greatest Saturday Night Live cast member, and he was given a posthumous Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2004. He died in 1982.

Did you know?!

  1. First role

After finishing high school, Belushi spent the summer of 1967 acting in plays at the Shawnee Summer Theatre of Greene County, located in Bloomfield, IN.

  2. Big break

Belushi formed his own Chicago comedy troupe, the West Compass Trio, with Tino Insana and Steve Beshekas, and its success led Second City founder Bernard Sahlins to ask him to join that club's cast.

  3. Big break

Lorne Michaels was reluctant to hire Belushi for Saturday Night Live, doubting his physical humor would fit, but changed his mind after giving him an audition.

  4. A change of course

In 1965 Belushi started a band called the Ravens with four high school classmates. He played drums and sang on their one single, "Listen to Me Now/Jolly Green Giant", and the group ended when he went to the College of DuPage.

  5. A change of course

As penance for turning Fear down, Belushi booked the band for SNL's Halloween broadcast on October 31, 1981, with O'Donoghue and writer Nelson Lyon, and agreed to a free cameo. NBC cut the telecast short over the band's profanity.
