Plot summary
Calvin and Zane Zaminsky work as radio astronomers for SETI, and they record a transmission that seems to come from Wolf 336, fourteen light-years away. Zane carries the tape to his supervisor, Phil Gordian, at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who waves the finding aside and destroys the recording. Budget cuts then end Zane's job, and a blacklisting keeps him out of other telescopes. He installs satellite dishes instead, building a telescope of his own from his customers' dishes in his attic, with Kiki, the boy next door, helping him. When the signal returns, a broadcast from a Mexican radio station is covering it, so Zane travels south to find its source. There Zane meets a climatologist named Ilana Green, whose instruments the guards at a new power plant seize.
