Plot summary
Bud Fox is a junior stockbroker in New York City at Jackson Steinem & Co. He wants to work with Gordon Gekko, a legendary Wall Street player. Bud calls Gekko's office fifty-nine days in a row, then visits on Gekko's birthday with contraband Cuban cigars. The persistence wins him an interview. His stock pitches leave Gekko cold. Desperate, Bud passes along inside information about Bluestar Airlines that he learned from his father Carl, who leads the maintenance workers' union there. Gekko says he will think about it.

- Michael Douglas won the Academy Award for Best Actor, while Daryl Hannah's performance earned her a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Supporting Actress, making it the only film to date to win both an Oscar and a Razzie.
- Gordon Gekko was a composite of real figures, including Wall Street broker Owen Morrisey, who was involved in a $20 million insider trading scandal in 1985, Ivan Boesky, Carl Icahn and Oliver Stone himself. Stone said the "Greed, for lack of a better word, is good" line was based on a Boesky speech.
- The studio wanted Warren Beatty to play Gordon Gekko but he was not interested, and Stone's own pick Richard Gere passed, so Stone cast Michael Douglas even though others in Hollywood advised him not to.
- Oliver Stone once walked into Michael Douglas's trailer and asked if he was doing drugs because "you look like you haven't acted before"; the shock pushed Douglas to work harder, culminating in the "Greed is good" speech.
- Stone gave Charlie Sheen the choice of Jack Lemmon or Martin Sheen to play his father Carl, and Sheen picked Martin Sheen, his own father.
- Charlie Sheen's character was first written as a young Jewish broker named Freddie Goldsmith in a draft titled Greed, before Stone renamed him Bud Fox to avoid the stereotype that Wall Street was controlled by Jews.
- Stone admitted he knew early on that Daryl Hannah was wrong for the part; his crew wanted to get rid of her after one day of shooting, but his pride kept him saying he would make it work.
- Stone chose a Fortune magazine cover over a similar Forbes offer in exchange for promotional ads, upsetting Forbes publisher Malcolm Forbes, who then turned down a request to use his private yacht.
