Plot summary
Artaban is a young Magus who believes a star marks the birthplace of a coming King, and he means to be there with gifts for the child. His friends and family urge him not to go. He sets out anyway with three precious jewels and his servant Orontes, who follows him without enthusiasm. The plan is to travel in the company of the three other wise men, but the caravan leaves without them. Artaban does not turn back. He keeps moving, arriving wherever his King has already been, and the road turns him toward people in need: his remaining wealth and his strength go to the poor and the unfortunate he encounters along the way.
