Plot summary
Joe Donan is a con artist, and a sting goes wrong when he accidentally kills his father, Mike. Mike's dying wish is that Joe recover the cake, the valuables that Mike's look-alike brother Lou took from him years earlier. Joe goes looking for his uncle Lou, a confidence man with schemes of his own who tries to enlist him. Lou's jobs are dangerous ones, and Joe is drawn into them. In Lou's circle Joe meets Diane, the girlfriend of Lou's assistant, and falls in love with her.

- Val Kilmer was initially cast as the con man Joe in director Christopher Coppola's Deadfall, but left at the last minute after not getting along with the producer, making The Real McCoy instead.
- A lab error on the print of Deadfall meant the awkward sex scene was double printed, so it played twice back to back at the premiere; the studio had not checked the print.
- After Val Kilmer's exit, Trimark Pictures slashed Deadfall's budget from $8 million to $3.4 million, and Christopher Coppola accused the actor of breaking his contract to take a $1 million offer elsewhere.
- Producer Ted Fox delivered Deadfall to Trimark $240,000 under budget, then refused when the studio asked for that money to be spent on reshoots. The bond company, Completion Bond, took over the reshoots, and litigation over who bore the cost delayed the release.
- The film was the prime influence on the song "Deadfall", written by the American hardcore punk band Snot.
