Plot summary
Michael, a bicycle courier, wishes his daughter a happy birthday before setting out on his route. At eight that morning, billionaire trader Jeffrey Cage and his wife, Eve, meet in the North Tower's law offices to sign divorce papers. A plane crashes into the building's upper floors while Jeffrey, Eve and Michael are in a descending elevator that stops around the thirty-eighth floor. Eddie, a maintenance man, and Tina, who has come to break up with a wealthy lover, are inside too. Metzie, the elevator dispatcher, reaches them over the public address system.

- Saturday Night Live's Pete Davidson, whose firefighter father died in the 9/11 attacks, condemned the film over star Charlie Sheen's 9/11 Truther history, a casting others called hypocritical; co-star Gina Gershon said she had not known of Sheen's statements until filming ended and would have spoken to him before committing.
- Three weeks before shooting was to begin, the film lost much of its financing because of its controversial subject matter, and lost a California Film Commission tax credit for missing job requirements, leaving producer Martin Sprock to pay for the production himself.
