Amy Adams

Biography

Amy Adams is an American actress who began as a dancer in dinner theater, performing from 1994 to 1998 before her film debut in the dark comedy Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999). Born in Aviano, Italy, and raised in Castle Rock, Colorado, she took early television guest spots and mean girl parts in low-budget features. Her first major role came in Steven Spielberg's Catch Me If You Can (2002), and her breakthrough was the independent comedy-drama Junebug (2005), which earned her first Academy Award nomination. She found leading success with Enchanted (2007), then earned praise for Doubt (2008), The Fighter (2010), and The Master (2012). From 2013 to 2017 she played Lois Lane in DC superhero films. She won two consecutive Golden Globes for American Hustle (2013) and Big Eyes (2014), and gained further acclaim for Arrival (2016), the miniseries Sharp Objects (2018), and Vice (2018). She has also appeared on stage in Into the Woods and The Glass Menagerie.

  1. Big break

Adams was one of 250 actresses who tried out for the part of Giselle in Enchanted. The studio wanted a bigger star, but director Kevin Lima insisted on Adams because of her commitment and her non-judgmental take on Giselle.

  2. A role that slipped away

Adams was passed over for Lois Lane in two earlier Superman films, but she landed the part in Zack Snyder's 2013 reboot, Man of Steel, which starred Henry Cavill as the superhero.

  3. Getting ready for a role

Adams played Julie Powell, a disgruntled government secretary who blogs about recipes from Mastering the Art of French Cooking, in the comedy-drama Julie & Julia. To get ready for the part, she took classes at the Institute of Culinary Education.
