Plot summary
Mother has put her career as an artist on hold to raise her two-year-old son. Her husband spends much of the year traveling for work, so the caregiving falls to her, and she feels cut off from her artistic life and out of place among the other mothers she meets. She begins to notice changes in her body: patches of fur, a tail, extra nipples, sharper senses. She first puts them down to stress, then grows certain she is turning into a dog. Dreams of her Mennonite childhood return to her, and she goes to the library for a book on mythical transformations, which strengthens what she believes is happening to her.
