Plot summary
In 1978, Irving Rosenfeld runs loan scams and sells forged paintings, and at a pool party he meets Sydney Prosser, who becomes his partner and lover under the alias Lady Edith Greensly, an English aristocrat with banking connections in London. Irving is married to Rosalyn and lives on Long Island with her and her son Danny, whom he has adopted and will not leave. FBI agent Richie DiMaso poses as a client; Sydney takes his check and is arrested. Richie offers the pair freedom if Irving helps him catch four more con artists, and his target is a New Jersey mayor rebuilding Atlantic City.

- Filming of American Hustle was halted when the Boston Marathon bombings put the city in lockdown. After the lockdown was lifted, the production finished its Boston shoot and spent its final days of production in New York City.
- American Hustle got ten Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and all four acting categories, but won none. It shares the second-highest shutout tally with Gangs of New York, True Grit, The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon, behind The Turning Point and The Color Purple.
- In October 2014 science writer Paul Brodeur sued the producers and distributors of American Hustle for defamation over Rosalyn's line that microwave ovens take the nutrition out of food, which she credits to him. Brodeur, author of The Zapping of America, says he never wrote that.
- The corrupt Camden mayor Carmine Polito was based on the real mayor Angelo Errichetti, who had a reputation for committing crimes even while being praised for caring about Camden. During Abscam he offered to get the fake sheikh into money counterfeiting and drug smuggling.
- American Hustle was the fifteenth film nominated in all four acting categories, and only the second since 1981 after David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook. Of those fifteen films, it joins only My Man Godfrey and Sunset Boulevard in winning no acting awards.
