Plot summary
J.D. Vance is a Yale Law student in 2011, working three jobs to pay for school, when his sister Lindsay calls with news that their mother, Bev, has overdosed on heroin. He drives home to Middletown, Ohio, and tries to find a rehab facility for her while a job interview looms the next morning. Bev refuses to return to rehab, and J.D. remembers his childhood in the 1990s: Bev's drug addiction and unstable behavior, his older sister Lindsay, and his grandmother Mamaw, who struggled to keep the family together and pushed him to make something of himself. He turns down help from his girlfriend, Usha.
