Plot summary
Rose Lorkowski supports herself and her son Oscar by cleaning houses in Albuquerque. Her sister Norah, who cannot hold a job, lives with their father, Joe. Oscar's school tells Rose to put him on medication or move him to a private school, and she cannot afford the tuition. Her former high school boyfriend Mac, now a police officer and a married man, is her lover. He tells her about crime scene cleanup and uses his police connections to get the sisters into the work. They are unlicensed at first and handle hazardous waste carelessly. Winston, a one-armed shopkeeper, sells them the supplies they need, and they name the business Sunshine Cleaning.
