Plot summary
Florence Forrest is a teenager in 1962 Malibu who is set on learning to surf, and the local surfer guys take her in and call her Chicklet. She begins losing stretches of time, showing sides of herself she does not recognize, and fearing she is behind the killings unsettling her town. Captain Monica Stark leads the investigation and looks at Chicklet's mother, her friend Berdine, the surfing teacher the Great Kanaka and Bettina Barnes, an actress in B-movies. Rounding out the group are Starcat, a university dropout Chicklet is drawn to, Swedish exchange student Lars, surfers Yo-Yo and Provoloney, Starcat's girlfriend Marvel Ann and Rhonda, the queen bee.

- Charles Busch's 1987 stage production was first titled Gidget Goes Psychotic until copyright concerns forced a change, and Busch played Chicklet himself; judging himself unconvincing as a 16-year-old, he wrote the new character Monica Stark into the film.
