Plot summary
In a dystopian future, Klara is an older B-1 Artificial Friend at The Friend Store, where shoppers favor newer B-3 models. Chosen to stand in the shop window, she watches two people pass by wrapped in a glow she takes for love. Josie approaches her and talks with her, which the store forbids. Chrissie, Josie's mother, is reluctant, but Klara is bought as the girl's companion. Josie has been lifted, gene therapy meant to raise intelligence, and she lives a solitary life in a grand country house beside a wheat farm. The pair become friends, and Klara tells Josie that the Sun is a deity able to grant desires. Chrissie and Melania, the housekeeper, greet Klara coolly, impatient with how little she knows. Josie takes Klara along to meet Rick, her friend.
