Plot summary
In Mount Rose, Minnesota, a film crew arrives to document the annual local qualifying round of the Sarah Rose Cosmetics American Teen Princess Pageant. Seventeen-year-old Amber Atkins enters, hoping the crown will bring a college scholarship and a path toward her idol, newswoman Diane Sawyer. Becky Leeman, whose family owns a furniture store, is also competing. Becky's mother, Gladys, heads the pageant committee and won the title years ago, and the business ties between the Leeman store and the judges leave other contestants fearing the contest is fixed. Gladys wants her daughter to follow in her footsteps. Amber lives with her mother, Annette, in a trailer park.
