Plot summary
After his father marries a wealthy divorcée, Sebastian Valmont leaves his old school for Manchester Prep, where the principal of his former school is determined to send his record ahead and spoil his fresh start. In New York Sebastian discovers his new family's money and meets his stepsister, Kathryn Merteuil, who warns him not to interfere with her comfortable life. He outdoes her at the piano and in a vocabulary contest, and the two clash. Waiting to see his new headmaster, he meets Danielle Sherman, the headmaster's daughter. At a school assembly Kathryn gives a speech to her classmates and presides over a secret society of student elites that passes judgment on the new students. The assembly leaves Kathryn set on a vendetta against Cherie Claymon, a classmate whose family is richer than hers.

- Fox canceled the planned series Manchester Prep, later turned into Cruel Intentions 2, after filming only the pilot and one more episode; executives objected to teen sexuality and incest, and Rupert Murdoch, head of Fox parent News Corporation, was said to be outraged by a preview of a scene in which a female character is aroused by a horse.
- After the show was scrapped, Columbia TriStar Home Video repackaged the two finished episodes as a direct-to-video film, shooting extra scenes to close the story and add sexual content and nudity.
- Deleted scenes uploaded to YouTube in 2022 revealed Manchester Prep was first a reimagining of the 1999 film and only became a prequel in reshoots: Sarah Thompson's character had been Annette, the part Reese Witherspoon played, and Sean Patrick Thomas was cut for continuity.
