Plot summary
Roy Chutney is finishing high school in Blue Springs, Montana, where he has not seen much of his father since his parents divorced. His father's death shakes him, and then funding cuts reduce the school program to a varsity squad alone. Roy, a skilled player, is among those let go because the coach doubts his mental toughness. Gideon Ferguson, who sells newspapers in town, is forming a six-man team for a back field league and asks Roy to join.
