Plot summary
Anna Fox, a child psychologist, lives by herself in a Manhattan brownstone, separated from her husband Edward, who is away with their daughter Olivia. Agoraphobia keeps her indoors, and she speaks with Edward and Olivia daily. She drinks heavily, takes medication and passes the time watching her neighbors. The Russell family has recently moved into the house across the street. Ethan Russell, the teenage son of Alistair Russell, visits Anna and says his father is abusive; Ethan's mother Jane also visits, and the two women become friendly. One night Anna sees a violent act in the Russells' living room and calls the police, but the officers do not believe her.
