Plot summary
London, on the eve of the Second World War. Guinevere Pettigrew, a straitlaced vicar's daughter, has lost her fourth post as a governess and her wages with it. At the employment agency Miss Holt has nothing to offer, so Guinevere takes a client's card from the desk and presents herself at the address. The client is Delysia Lafosse, an American singer and actress who wants a social secretary, not a governess, and who is juggling three men: Michael, a devoted pianist; Phil, a young producer who may cast her in a West End play; and Nick, the wealthy owner of the nightclub where she performs. Guinevere's task is to keep each of them unaware of the others while Delysia chases the part.

- Winifred Watson, author of the original book, first sold the film rights to Universal Pictures in 1939, which developed it as a musical to star Billie Burke in the title role; it was shelved when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor just before filming was scheduled to begin.
- The film is set in 1939, yet as Delysia bathes, The Pied Pipers' 1945 recording of "Dream" can be heard in the background, as if on a radio; Johnny Mercer wrote the song in 1944.
