Plot summary
The two countries have been at war since 1798. Gilliatt lives on Guernsey, where he works as a fisherman and also as a smuggler, sailing a ship called the Sea Devil. His partner Willie sails with him. Droucette asks for passage to the French coast, and Gilliatt agrees to take her. She says her brother is imprisoned in France and that she means to organize his rescue. Gilliatt falls in love with her during the crossing.

- The female lead in Sea Devils was first offered to Joan Fontaine, who turned it down. Yvonne De Carlo took the part, which forced her to postpone Savage Frontier, a film she was due to make for Edward Small.
- Bryan Forbes's role as Rock Hudson's sidekick was written for Barry Fitzgerald. Forbes got it because he had befriended director Raoul Walsh while making The World in His Arms (1952); Walsh insisted on him and had the part rewritten for a younger actor.
- Director Raoul Walsh fell into the sea while shooting one scene and had to take two days off work to recover.
- Victor Hugo lived on Guernsey, which is why Sea Devils is set there. The house used for Lethierry in the film appears to be Hugo's own house, or a copy of it.
