Biography

Rod Cameron was a Canadian actor who worked in film and television, and his screen career ran from the 1930s into the 1970s. Born in Calgary and raised in New Jersey, he started as a stuntman and body double for Buck Jones, then took bit parts at Paramount and stood in for Fred MacMurray. His early credits included Heritage of the Desert and the horror film The Monster and the Girl. In 1943 he gained star status in Republic action serials as federal agent Rex Bennett in G-Men vs. the Black Dragon and Secret Service in Darkest Africa. He replaced Johnny Mack Brown as Universal's Western series star and appeared in Salome, Where She Danced, Commandos Strike at Dawn, Wake Island (1942), and Gung Ho! (1943). Later films included The Gun Hawk (1963), The Last Movie (1971), and Psychic Killer (1975). He also headlined the syndicated television series City Detective, State Trooper, and Coronado 9.
