Plot summary
Cynthia is still reeling from the death of her baby when she joins five friends on a vacation. The group charters a plane in Seattle, and engine trouble forces them to land on a remote island in Puget Sound. They set up camp, and in the morning Paul stays behind while the others look for help. They come across a large cottage in the woods and inside meet the owners, an older married couple called Ma and Pa, who invite them to stay. At dinner Lynn lights a cigarette, and Pa orders her to smoke outside. Later Lynn and Cynthia learn that Ma and Pa have a child, Fanny, a middle-aged woman who says she is only twelve. That night Ma and Pa lay down strict rules, separating the boys from the girls.
