Plot summary
At the Committee on Human Endurance, a group studying how much pain and physical stress a body can endure for the space program, the anthropologist Dr. Henry Hallson has drawn up anonymous questionnaires meant to find people with unusual survival capacity, and tried them first on fellow members. At a meeting he announces that one of them has an intellect too large to measure and can command other minds. Nobody claims the ability. Dr. Carl Melnicker proposes a test with a psi wheel, and Hallson, certain the subject will not give himself away, has everyone concentrate on it together. The wheel turns. Later Hallson is discovered killed inside the laboratory's human centrifuge, and a slip of paper in his office carries the name Adam Hart. Once records of his academic past vanish, Dr. Jim Tanner is the prime suspect.

- George Pal said MGM wanted a star for the lead in The Power, but he argued a star "would ruin the basis for the story because no one is supposed to know who 'the power' is." In January 1966 he was reportedly discussing the film with Cliff Robertson.
- The Power's soundtrack uses a beating heart to signal the mind-control attempts and eerie music from a cymbalom, a hammered dulcimer, for suspense. Miklós Rózsa's score breaks the fourth wall when Tanner hears the haunting tune in a hotel lobby and finds a cymbalum-violin duet.
- Miklós Rózsa's score for The Power was his final one for an MGM-produced film, after he had scored numerous films for the studio throughout his career.
- The Power may contain the first appearance and operation by telekinesis of a psi wheel in a film.
