Plot summary
In Virginia in 1865, with the fighting over after General Lee's surrender, the war correspondent Jim Steed trades remarks with Count von Bohlen, an arrogant Prussian officer serving there as a military attaché. A year later Steed is in Vienna, where war between Austria and Prussia is close. He meets Anna Marie, a celebrated dancer, and talks her into spying on von Bohlen, who has risen to the Prussian general staff and is infatuated with her. Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- According to one source, 21 Royal Canadian Air Force bombardier students who loved Yvonne De Carlo as a pinup campaigned to get her the part. De Carlo said it was at her own behest: she took revealing photos of herself and had two childhood friends from Vancouver, by then pilots, lobby their friends for her.
- The film was loosely based on an Arizona legend about a town called "Drinkmens Wells", which came to be known as "Salome, Where She Danced". In the story a Mexican dance-hall performer named Salome danced to hold the attention of a group of outlaws while the town's law-abiding residents armed themselves.
- Ava Gardner failed to show for a wardrobe test, and MGM would not let her go. Art director Alexander Golitzen, finding Yvonne De Carlo waiting with her agent, asked "Why don't we test her", then grabbed her and raced her to the wardrobe department.
