Plot summary
George Washington McLintock, a cattle baron whose town shares his name, lives on the Mesa Verde ranch. He tells arriving homesteaders that the dry land suits cattle only, since earlier settlers failed for lack of water. Devlin Warren, a young settler who looks after his widowed mother Louise and his sister Alice, asks for a job. McLintock's first answer is no, since Devlin farms. When Devlin protests at having to beg, his bluntness wins him the job, and Louise is taken on as a cook. Katherine, McLintock's wife, has been gone two years back East. She returns to seek a divorce. He refuses, so she moves into the ranch house and starts giving orders.

- Maureen O'Hara said John Wayne did not pull his strokes when he spanked her with a coal scuttle shovel in their famous scene, leaving her bottom black and blue for weeks.
- John Wayne insisted that Yvonne De Carlo be given a supporting role, because her husband Bob Morgan had been injured while making How the West Was Won.
- Batjac Productions failed to renew McLintock!'s copyright, which expired in 1991, and a 1994 legal case confirmed the film was in the public domain in the United States, though the music score stayed under copyright.
