Plot summary
Amantha Starr grows up in Kentucky as the cherished daughter of a plantation owner, schooled away from home and treated as a young lady. When her father dies, she learns he owed money and that her mother was one of his slaves, which leaves Amantha legally property. A slave trader carries her downriver toward New Orleans to be sold. At the auction a coarse buyer inspects her until Hamish Bond outbids him and pays a high price. At his city mansion Bond treats her as a lady rather than a slave. There she meets Michele, his housekeeper and former lover, and Rau-Ru, the educated man he relies on, who resents the hold Bond keeps over him.

- Robert Penn Warren's 1955 novel Band of Angels, the source for the film, was inspired by a historical event he came across while researching his novel All the King's Men, and it was his first novel in five years.
