Plot summary
In 1866, frontier scout Jim Bridger, known among the tribes as Tomahawk, leads a band of fur traders and Sioux. Word of gold and a conference that settles nothing send the U.S. Army to lay a road and build a fort on land earlier treaties gave to the Sioux, and Bridger, whose Cheyenne wife taught him to see the dispute from both sides, argues against it. A small traveling show run by Julie Madden makes for the fort under an escort commanded by Lt. Rob Dancy, whose violence toward the Sioux could be the spark that starts the war. When the show is attacked on the road and Julie's elderly companion Dan Castello is carried to the fort with an arrow in his chest, Julie turns to Bridger for help.
