Plot summary
In Oakwood, California, officers raid the Argus Bookstore and take its day manager, Ben Fremont, into custody on an obscenity charge for selling The Seven Minutes, a novel banned in the 1930s. Publisher Phil Sanford hires lawyer Mike Barrett. District Attorney Elmo Duncan, pressed by Olivia St. Clair's decency league and backed by millionaire Luther Yerkes for a Senate run, wants a bigger issue than a bookseller, and finds one when a teenager, Jerry Griffith, is accused of rape and a copy of the novel is found in his car. Jerry's cousin Maggie Russell alone believes he is innocent. The case becomes a public fight over censorship, and Barrett works to uncover the mystery of the book's original publication.
