Plot summary
After having his face surgically altered to resemble Humphrey Bogart, a man adopts the name Sam Marlowe, taking it from two of Bogart's fictional detectives, Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe. He hires Duchess as his secretary and opens a detective agency. Business is slow at first, but a shooting puts his picture in the paper and brings new clients. Commodore Alexander Anastas, Gena Anastas, and Mr. Zebra are among those hunting for the Eyes of Alexander, a set of priceless blue sapphires that came from a statue of Alexander the Great. Marlowe and Duchess are drawn into the middle of that hunt.

- Fenady took the film to Mel Simon, who agreed to provide $4 million, but he wound up not needing all that money and returned $400,000 to Simon: “I'm a Depression baby, I don't believe in wasting money”.
- During the filming of one scene, a boat hit John Wayne's converted minesweeper, the Wild Goose; also appearing in the film was screen veteran George Raft, in his last film role.
