During the Allied occupation of Paris at the end of World War II, Sergeant Boysie Oakes of a tank corps trips while rushing to help a fellow Englishman and shoots dead two men who meant to kill Major Mostyn. Mostyn concludes that Oakes is a born killer. Twenty-one years later Mostyn is a colonel, and a run of security leaks has his superiors under pressure. The chief orders him to hire an assassin to remove such problems off the books. Mostyn brings Oakes into MI5 without explaining what the work involves.
