Plot summary
Tim Brett has written a book about his years as a drug addict and has been off drugs for roughly a year when he travels to an Italian coastal hotel to see his aunt, a wealthy philanthropist who wants to help some of the people he once knew. On a tour of Pompeii, other visitors find her body; she has been strangled. At the funeral, Signor Bardoni, who owns the hotel, calls it ironic that a woman who spent her life helping criminals was killed by one, and he hides a wreath card signed by The Stepping Stones. Brett becomes engaged to Juliet, a woman who was among those who found his aunt. Six months later in England, unhappy with the police inquiry, he questions his aunt's acquaintances, and strangers warn him to stop.
