Plot summary
For a thousand years the humans of the Twelve Colonies have been at war with the robotic Cylons, who seek to wipe out humanity. The Cylons now ask for peace through a human diplomat, Lord Baltar, and the Council of the Twelve and the fleet's commanders welcome the offer. The battlestars gather for the talks. Only Commander Adama of the Galactica distrusts the Cylon offer, so he orders a reconnaissance patrol. Captain Apollo, his eldest son, flies it, and Adama's younger son Zac persuades Lieutenant Starbuck to give up his place on the patrol. Behind the moon Cimtar the two Vipers come upon a Cylon armada waiting in ambush, and the Cylons jam their signals. Aboard the Galactica, Adama has his squadrons readied under the cover of a battlestations drill.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- 20th Century Fox sued Universal in June 1978 for plagiarism, claiming Battlestar Galactica stole 34 distinct ideas from Star Wars; Universal countersued, saying Star Wars had lifted the robot drones from its 1972 film Silent Running and ideas from the 1930s Buck Rogers serials.
- The three-hour US TV premiere was interrupted for thirty minutes in three time zones so ABC could carry the signing of the Camp David Peace Accords between Israel's Menachem Begin and Egypt's Anwar Sadat, overseen by President Jimmy Carter, then resumed where it left off.
- TV censors changed a launch-tube scene of Starbuck and Cassiopia: the broadcast version has them sitting fully clothed, while the theatrical version shows them having sex as Athena watches on a monitor.
