Biography

Mona Washbourne was an English actress who trained as a concert pianist in Birmingham before starting professional work in the early 1920s. She moved into films in 1948 after years of stage musicals, and her screen credits included Billy Liar (1963), The Collector (1965) and The Brides of Dracula. American audiences knew her best as Mrs. Pearce, the housekeeper in My Fair Lady (1964), and she was also the caustic Mrs. Bramson in Night Must Fall (1964) and the Matron in If.... (1968). She appeared at London's Royal Court and on Broadway in David Storey's Home in 1970, earning a Tony nomination, and in 1975 she was back in the West End alongside James Stewart in a revival of Harvey. Her most acclaimed work came late, in Stevie (1978), which brought BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations and a 1981 New York Film Critics Circle award, after a 1977 Laurence Olivier Award for supporting actress. She died in 1988.

Mona Washbourne won the 1977 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for the stage play that the film Stevie was based on, a year before she earned Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for the film version.

Washbourne took the part originally played by Josephine Hull in a 1975 West End revival of Mary Chase's play Harvey, appearing with James Stewart.
