Plot summary
Brother Ambrose lives in a monastery whose abbot, Thelonious, sends him out to raise $5,000, the sum needed to keep the place from closing. In Hollywood, Ambrose is robbed, then befriended by Dr. Sebastian Melmoth, a con artist. Mary, a prostitute, lets him stay at her apartment. He visits several churches. At the Church of Divine Profit, the televangelist Armageddon T. Thunderbird delivers a sermon that asks for money in return for salvation. The message angers Ambrose, and he tries to meet Thunderbird again and again, but Thunderbird has him thrown out each time. Melmoth and Ambrose then travel the city in a school bus, holding church services for donations.
