Plot summary
Fred Cox, who calls himself Captain Dandy Forsdyke, lives by picking pockets and cracking safes, and he never gives his real name. Babette, a stripper he plans to marry, wants him to go straight before the wedding, but his old associates keep drawing him back into crime. Babette hears of Crooks Anonymous, a society founded by Montague and paid for by a legacy, which has a strong record of reforming thieves, and she agrees to help its members cure him. During a robbery, Brother Widdowes, dressed as a policeman, picks Cox up and brings him to the society's headquarters. Montague questions him and learns that the man is a habitual liar who has never seen military service. Widdowes and Montague then lock him in a room full of safes holding cigarettes, food and drink, fitted with booby traps.
