Plot summary
While traveling in London, Canadian pilot Jeffrey Buckenham watches a televised tour of an English ancestral home led by the baronet Sir Mark Sebastian Loddon. Buckenham was held with Loddon in a German prisoner-of-war camp after the Dunkirk evacuation, and he is certain that the man on screen is Frank Welney, a British actor who shared a hut with Loddon and closely resembled him. Loddon's cousin Gerald Loddon urges Buckenham to write to a tabloid newspaper claiming that Welney is posing as the baronet. Loddon sues Buckenham and the paper for libel, though his memory of the war is troubled by trauma.
